C64 Round Up: October 2022 featuring Captain Ishtar
I wish someone would/could make an expansion pack for Law of the West. That was one of the most fun games ever made on any system because of the dialog interactions and different ways of scoring points. Eventually, you've tried them all. An expansion pack or construction kit option would have been awesome, especially now in the internet age.
Breadbox is a good idea in principle but I feel charging for an frontend that has very noticeable input lag even in early access seems like something of a joke. How this fancy frontend manages just make C64 emulation look like a difficult task I don't know and it's minimum requirements seem to suggest it is currently really poorly optimised. It's a nice idea but I can't see too many people using it beyond curiosity.
I was really surprised that Breadbox required such high spec machines to run smoothly. I am equally surprised that the dev decided to pursue Breadbox considering that it probably holds the record for one of the worst performing Indiegogo crowd funding campaigns (it only achieved 1% of its target).

Great game. I am also developing a new Amiga game :)
Nice to hear, I am hoping by new you actually mean new game and not a port of something already released. Keep us informed of your progress.
@@RetroGamerNation it's a complete new game for the Amiga 500

Did I miss the crafting part?
Thoroughly enjoyed playing this - reviewed it for Retro Gamer and awarded it a Sizzler, and it got a Sizzler from ZZAP! AMIGA as well. Have preordered the Zero Clucks Edition with T-shirt.
amiga games always look so good...what sorcery is in those machines??
What beautyful artwork. I want it for my nintendo switch or 3ds.
It kind of reminds me of Mystic Towers for DOS. In fact I'd be surprised if it did not take some inspiration from that game with the kill all enemies on map to progress sort of logic.
looks awesome. so glad you popped your head out to do the review
Cheers, the game was too good to not to show to a wider audience. I am more likely to do more of these pop in videos to help sustain the channel during quieter c64 activity periods.
Sky Saviour looks fairly interesting for a quick go 🤔 interesting idea. Timo looks worth a go...nice graphics. Backgrounds are a bit too foregroundy on some of the levels shown though. Thanks for the episode, i enjoyed it. The demo was just truly incredible.
Thanks so much for sharing your views. I am always keen to hear of each person's own perspective on these releases.
The PCB Ghost art 😮 several of the others are absolutely stunning too. Wow.
Tony is very good. I really enjoyed the demo. Their strategy of releasing to everything makes it feel like ive been drowned in Tony news for absolutely ages though 😂
I think many who follow the scene do get weary of constant re-promotion of upcoming titles. I think devs think this is a good thing to do mainly because it appears that it works for Sarah Jane Avory and her C64 titles, but this is more to do with her having a super loyal fan base rather than something we all want.
is the music at the end from the game?
Yes it is. It is from the title screen.
Its not enough that every other video game in 2024 is a "ROUGELIKE!!!"(tm). Now it's infecting machines that have been dead for 30 years.
The Amiga isn't dead, over 50 new games for it last year alone
And at least 5% is original IP 🙂
@@merman1974 Well, technically it died back in 1992/3, when the 386 PC was churning out silky smooth 256 colour titles like Alone In The Dark, UFO : Enemy Unknown, Wolfenstein 3D etc. As a retro machine it's still interesting. I've had WinUAE installed for 20 years now I guess.
GFX are nice... but cannot beat the bitmap brother charme of Cadaver.
Heh, I woulda loved this when I had an Amiga 500, more than 30 years ago.
Oh, no I guess I wouldn't have. Only had a 500 with 1MG chip ram... I think it was ECS tho.
The graphics/art/music are all PERFECT.
On the road to 10k subs....then 100k!
Hey thanks for your support and optimism. Growth for the channel has more or less flatlined and while getting 10k subscribers across 7 years has been a slow effort, I know that based on recurring viewers I have one of the most loyal 10k subscribers - so thank you everyone.
Please make a Steam version!
Gorgeous art style there.
That's so 'friggin beautiful looking!! 👁👁
Looking great!
אני אוהב את החתול שלי "חמור עכביש כלב".
looks beautifull :) Please convince someone to recreate "into the breach" to amiga :)
starange no OCS 1mb? :/
This looks quite nice ...always happy to see new stuff released on the amiga. Looking forward to it.
isometric games have always been underrated.
Gorgeous looking game, I think I'll be getting this!
That's a *beautiful* looking game and really awesome to see much effort and attention being put even into retro games, so many years after the platform's heyday.
The platform. Here the Amiga. Becomes like a music instrument! Especially the c64. It is almost organic. Like an organ. You know? The game developers are organists. They love their instruments which they know so well :)
This game looks great!!
Looks awesome, but please we need a new Moonstone!!!!
This is the sequel to the very-capable Rogue64, isn't it? It's even better than I expected, and looks to be a good game even by modern standards. The pixel art and fluidity is delicious. And unlike many "pixel barf" modern games, that seek to represent incorrectly the limitations of older systems, this operates on a real 16-bit system from the 80s.
Yes it is. I am impressed that the Badger Punch guys spent so much effort to make it more than an Amiga port
Looks freaking awesome 👍😎
Now think of it - these are OCS graphics!
Since invention of 45 degrees rotated games 45 degrees rotated games are bad to play!
What's that got to do with this isometric game?
@@Izzanbaad I believe that is exactly what he is referring to. I see his point, but it all comes down to the control scheme. It doesn't matter all that much if you keep strictly to the isometric view, but many games, including this one, do not. You will notice that the minimap is _not_ isometric, meaning that the isometric view of the playing field doesn't line up with the map. As such it means that up-left on the playing field is west (left) on the map, while up-right is north (up). This is where the control scheme comes in. Some isometric games align the controls with the map, meaning moving left will actually move your character up-left on the playing field, while moving up will move your character up-right. This is quite unintuitive, and can lead to unfortunate situations like walking into an enemy unintentionally. Other games may align the controls with the playing field (and/or have the map isometric as well), so that you need to move up-left to have your character move up-left. This is much more intuitive, but can get annoying on digital joysticks. If you can only move in the cardinal directions between the tiles of the playing field, this means you have to always move the joystick diagonally, which takes more strength. Basically, the spring holding the stick gets harder to move the further away from center you go, and moving diagonally to activate for instance both the left and top microswitches requires you to move the stick quite a bit further off-center than simply going left. As such, your hand is likely to get tired much more quickly playing such a game. All that being said, it's not something that bothers me a lot, but I understand that some people might have a problem with it. Of course there are isometric games where this never comes into play. Populous 1&2 are isometric but they are mouse driven and you don't control any characters directly, so the issue never comes up.
You are 100% correct with your analysis. I had to position my joystick diagonally in order to avoid what you described. This would be the only 'weak' point with the game, otherwise its very well produced
@@RetroGamerNation I take it that the control scheme is aligned with the map then?
Yes, controls are aligned with the map.
Wow, I was trying to spot color clash and still couldn't! 👏
this channel is just stupidly underrated
Indeed. 🙁 Great channel.
You are a champ for saying so. No idea why the algorithm gods have not given any of my content a boost but I am so grateful to have a loyal viewer base. My consistent ratio of viewers vs subs is very high compared to my peers. I am so lucky to have solid base that appreciate the content.
nice
breadbox seems more of a novelty thing than anything really useful. Cheers for keeping us all updated.
I tend to agree with you here. I can’t say that I have been tempted to play around with it any further since the recording of the video.
@@RetroGamerNation reminds me of a tech demo than a useable program. Still interesting though, not sure if id want to pay for it.
For the work your channel puts into these Commodore 64 Round Ups, you should have 4.5 million views not 4,500. Be that as it may, I appreciate the attention to detail that goes into all of these, thank you.
The channel viewership is very consistent and is decent for the niche genre but I have not really been able to grow views and have never had any that have gone beyond 25K, no idea why when I look at my peers who do have the occasional big hit every now and then. I am a bit disappointed with how the 90s round up editions have underperformed, maybe I might have one more go at it later on in the year...we'll see.
If I recall correctly Wings of Fury's title music impressed me a lot as a kid! Thanks for another great video!
The Never on Time pic by Lobo is just lush. I love the colour and detail in it.
That FLT demo was fantastic. I loved the design of the characters, the storyline and the humour. Timo's Castle looks lovely too. Brightly colourful without being garish, and full of neat, clear detail. I hope the July edition includes details of the new Indiegogo campaign for brand new breadbin C64 cases. The cases will be available various colours, including crystal clear, blue, green, black, white and purple.
I backed the breadbin case, have no idea what colour to choose. Not sure if the campaign will still be going by the time I put out the next video in August. I have a neat addon to showcase in that video but very little else at this stage.
The demo was just WOW. ❤❤❤
Great to see Shift ported to the c64. I use to play this game on my Android phone a few years ago.
Love a demo with a great story
It was incredible ❤
The Fairlight demo is amazing
Agreed. Truly stunning. I am amazed by it.
Lovely work with this round up as ever, and thank you very much for featuring my tune! 😄
Another excellent round-up. I really appreciated the dedication to Cam.
"Get in the Van" is a great tune. Good to hear from you, Louie. Thanks for the video!
